“I don’t play to be the best—I play to get better,” said hockey player John Garcia, a mindset that has led him through 10 years of on ice competition.
Playing since he was six years old, Garcia has had many accomplishments throughout the past decade.
“Being able to participate and win the state championship in 2018 is probably my proudest moment.”
Garcia, who was born and raised in Pueblo, began playing for The Pueblo Jaguars in 2015. “My older cousin was a hockey player, and I thought it was so cool, so I wanted to try it, and it sort of just stuck,” stated Garcia when asked what got him interested in his sport. “My favorite player was always Wayne Gretsky, and even though he retired, he still is."
His sophomore year, Garcia had a total of four goals and approximately four assists. His defensive position has taught him to work hard to protect the goal and clear the puck.
What motivates Garcia to not only show up, but work hard is his goals. “It's the only shot I have at success. I enjoy the game, and enjoy the work it takes to get where I want to be.”
Dedicating 3 hours every month for the entirety of the season takes discipline. The dedication he shows is inspiring, especially to his younger cousin, who currently plays in the little league.
Balancing school, work, and two sports can be exhausting, but with the right motivation, Garcia makes it possible.
“You're supposed to make time for what matters, and hockey matters a lot to me. Even if I struggle to keep a balanced schedule, hockey will always be a priority.”
With aspirations and dreams of playing at a college level, and maybe even going pro, Garcia's journey is just beginning. Greatness is built on heart, dedication, and love for the game.
